Custom Workshops
Departments and colleges can request customized workshops to be held during Weeks 3-9 of any quarter or during the longer breaks after summer and autumn quarters. (Please note: sessions must occur between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.) To request a Carmen workshop, email carmen@osu.edu and tell us what you need.
The Digital Union routinely offers standard Carmen workshops at various times during the quarter. Online Carmen video tutorials are available for viewing any time.
Regularly Scheduled Carmen Workshop Topics
Integrate e-learning into your existing course, or take part or all of your course online by utilizing the Carmen learning environment. Join your colleagues in developing techniques and considering pedagogical strategies in the use of Carmen tools. Workshop staff will be available to answer general Carmen questions from individuals for 30 minutes following each session. View upcoming workshops for specific dates.
QuickStart
This workshop is an overview of Carmen, OSU's course management system. This hands-on session is designed for beginners, but is also good for users who want a better understanding of the default tools:

This session is intended as a foundation for basic Carmen use and for taking additional Carmen workshops.
Gradebook
This workshop on the Gradebook in the Carmen system covers the following topics:
- Gradebook Setup
- Enter Grades
- Final Grades Calculation
- Instructor and Student Views
- Exporting Grades to a Spreadsheet
- Transferring Final Grades to the Registrar
Quizzes
Learn to create questions of various types and build quizzes in Carmen with a variety of options and settings. This hands-on session includes a review of security issues and options.
Activities and Assignments
Learn techniques and consider pedagogical strategies using selected Carmen Activities and Assignments tools. This hands-on session includes an introduction to the following tools:
- Discussion
- Dropbox
- Groups
CarmenWiki
This hands-on workshop will provide instructors with technical experience and a discussion of pedagogical strategies for using a wiki as part of a course assignment. We'll focus on how to create and edit pages, do basic formatting, and manage access levels when using Ohio State’s CarmenWiki. Time will be available at the end of the 60-minute workshop for more detailed questions and answers. This is a beginning level course.
Carmen Rubrics and Feedback
Learn to use the Rubrics tool in Carmen to provide structured feedback. Rubrics let you list your expectations for student performance and apply them consistently to student submissions. In this workshop, you will learn to build two types of rubrics within Carmen and apply them in the Dropbox. If time allows, we will also look at other methods for providing feedback from within Quizzes and Grades.

Custom Carmen
Any of the regular Carmen workshops (see Regularly Scheduled Carmen Workshop descriptions above) or workshops customized to cover specific topics in Carmen can be requested as a custom workshop for your group. We can tailor the workshop for your specific needs. Custom workshops can be designed to delve deeper into the use of a specific tool, highlight tools used for a specific purpose, or provide contextual and pedagogical insight into tool selection and implementation. We encourage departments to schedule workshops for faculty, instructors, new teaching assistants, or teaching groups.

The following workshops titles and descriptions are meant to provide ideas for custom workshops for groups interested in an introduction to Carmen or in developing and enhancing their use of Carmen in teaching and learning. The workshop will be tailored to the group's specific needs and interests.
Carmen Overview
This short demonstration course highlights the most commonly used tools in Carmen. The intent is to introduce instructors to effective and efficient uses of Carmen and to encourage brainstorming about how to incorporate Carmen tools into existing courses.
Best Practices in Content
Focus on effective uses of the Content and Files area in Carmen, learn to use Release Conditions, and review options and techniques for using multi-media files. With interest, this workshop may cover optimizing Word and PDF files for easier downloading and accessibility. Optional: explore content-related tools not included in the default course set.
